"Self-realization is meant to ensure fulfilment for one’s own self. It is not reaching somewhere or getting at something external, like going to the peak of a mountain. The attainment is in dissolving the mind and intelligence, and getting into the very core of oneself. In other words, it is like multiplying everything with zero."

Short Description

In the matter of japa, what is required is with all the other functions of the mind, the japa should also become a function. So, it cannot be half an hour or one hour japa. When you sit for japa, that japa should be a continuous process. What does it mean? The mantra or the nāma that you take for doing japa, keep chanting it throughout the day, whenever your mind and intelligence are not very vibrantly occupied. When they are occupied, let them be occupied. You have to do some work, that is why the mind is occupied. When some work is to be done, the mind cannot be withdrawn from it and engaged in something else. That will be very bad. So for the other moments, the mind should be always given to the mantra, mantra, mantra, japa ,japa, japa. That is possible.

Harih Om Tat Sat. Jai Guru. Jai Guru.

Today I thought of mentioning to you something about japa. Some people are coming and reporting to me that they are not able to do japa properly. “When I start chanting a mantra or God’s name, my mind doesn’t get focused on that.” I would like you to understand that the mind is never given to keeping quiet. Can the blood circulation in our body stop? What about the respiration śvāsochvāsa? That also cannot stop. Can the digestive process stop? Urination, kidney’s function, liver function, all these are functions which are going on ceaselessly.

Our mind is also supposed to remember the past, be concerned about the present and also future. To link up the past with the present and future is the role of the mind. How do you expect the mind to keep quiet? We don’t want a quiet mind, still mind. We want a vibrant mind. But we want a change in the mind’s function. We want the mind to be light, peaceful, cheerful, contented. All these qualities can be built into our mind. Never doubt it.

You can chant for one minute, half a minute, quarter minute, 1.8th of a minute, while passing stool, urine, while lying, while eating, every time when the mind is not actively involved with some job, go on doing the japa. If you start doing it, then you will find, initially the mind will not remember, will not accept. But after sometime, the mind will accept and the mantra will become more common than the other thoughts. Then, there will be a stock of japa with you. That stock of japa will make it easy for the mind to do japa, when you sit specially for it. It is something very simple but nobody hears it, nobody hears it.

Early in the morning by about 5 or 5.30 I get up and I go to bed and sleep perhaps by 12, 12.30 or so. In between, you will find my mind is always active. I take some rest during the midday. The rest of the time, my mind is quite active, but I don’t find any load, any heaviness, weight in the mind, and I am not able to find a point when I am not joyous. The type of joy that I have been looking for is not laughing and smiling and giggling and all that. No. I wanted always something - Neither be happy nor be unhappy. Be above both. Accept good and bad.

A very serious rape is reported day before yesterday. The front-line news in the Matrubhumi (newspaper) is the rape. How agonizing it is! But you know, when I read the newspaper, if I say that, people will not like and they will misunderstand also. I have all the sympathy, not stopping with the man who raped and the girl who died. My sympathy is overflowing to the society and the people at large.

So far as action in the matter is concerned, we can hardly do anything. It is for the home department and the police to act. But I am concerned about why this is happening? What is this reason? The number of instances is much more now than others. So, what is it that is required to arrest this tendency or bridle it? I start thinking this manner, because that area of the crime is not within our purview. There is a feeling that we can hardly do anything. But my feeling is there that the society should become more conscious, both at the individual, family and the societal level and there should be very stern action. I think crisscross in the matter. All the thoughts I am not expressing now. But my peace is not disturbed by it. There are some ideological points. I think very seriously about them. If I get agitated over the issue, I cannot think, I cannot present.

I was given ten questions by Vishwa Hindu Parishad to be published in their magazine. All the questions are very good, very well put, respectfully put. Now I have to give an answer which will be of a constructive nature, not a damaging nature. In the answers, it is not emotion that is required, but some beautiful reasoning and suggestions to set right matters.

The point I wanted to emphasize is that, don’t think that your Swamiji is keeping quiet. Now, in spite of it, why is it that he doesn’t feel lack of peace, lack of joy and lack of fulfillment? That may be a last point for you, but at least begin from this. Let the japa be not restricted to half an hour or one hour. Let the mind expand. In the expansion of the mind I would like you to think about the sky. We are living on the earth. Every day, we are greeted by the sun and the moon. There are a number of stars also. But they are too small and we don’t know much about them. But you should understand that the sky is much, much, much, much broader and wider than all these stars and planets. How is it that these planets are held by space? The space itself has no life, it is seemingly inert. Why don’t you think about it?

We possess a little land. It is a portion of the earth. The earth itself is not even like a mustard in the universe. When you start treating the mind with these larger ideas, larger introspections, do you know what will happen? The mind will go on expanding, expanding, expanding. Don’t struggle, don’t struggle with your wrongs and defects, but incorporate and cultivate their opposite qualities. “I have got constriction, I am proud, I have ego, I am possessive.” Don’t start lamenting in this manner. On the other hand, try to think about expansiveness, expansiveness, expansiveness. I would like ‘X’ from today onwards at least for 41 days, let him constantly think about space, space and space. When he starts thinking about space, the mind will reflect space and the mind’s dimension and magnitude will start growing, growing, growing. And the same mind about which he grumbles now, he will start boosting.

We should not struggle with the defects but cultivate the virtues. Pratipaksha-bhāvana is the Sanskrit phrase for you. Whatever you suffer from, think about the opposite, reflect upon it. By struggling and blaming about the defects, you are only increasing the defects mentally. What we want is an elimination of the defects and think about the virtues. So, think, think, think, think. What is this earth? Where is this sky? What is this sun? Where is the moon? Where are the stars? Perhaps this is called darhara vidya in our culture. Something very, very expansive!

Even ocean is not sufficient and you cannot always see it. But you are constantly seeing the sky. And in the sky, you tell me, what is the place of our earth? If you think about the sky, your mind will become spacial. To help the process, you can chant, chant, chant, chant. But the chanting should not be, should not be for a short duration, and the chanting should be consciously done. I am chanting the name of God, so God should be our focus. Truth should be our focus, not the chanting. For that we chant, that’s all. In this way, if you start treating your mind, you will find within a course of one or two months, there will be great, great changes and progression. Try it.
