"Let not world-objects be your mind’s master. Let them be, if at all, subservient to the mind. To be spiritual is not to look for one’s delight and fulfillment in the objects of the world. The mind that causes delight through any object can also provide delight without such an object. Delight in reality belongs to the mind alone. It is verily mind’s own gift."

Q & A

I am working in private sector and have some family issues. My husband who was suffering from cardiac problems and kidney failure passed away two months back. While in hospital also I was chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam throughout .

I was not able to attend any Sapthaham, however I am a regular viewer of your programme in Asianet. Your Asianet discourse changed me lot and after that I am not praying to God for any favour. I am chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam and Narayaneeyam (Kesadhipadam only) daily morning 4 to 4.30 and some chapters of Bhagavatham at night. But now I cannot concentrate in my prayers.

Swamiji please advice me what I have to do to control myself, to concentrate in my prayers as well as in my work and to attain mental strength to face my problems. I am a devotee of Lord Guruvayurappan . Swamiji please bless me with any keerthanam or namam which I can chant regularly.

With Pranamam

Dear and Blessed S.,

Devotion is primarily and ultimately an attitude or emotion of the mind. It is in the nature of relying upon God, considering Him to be supreme and wholesome in every way.  When you rely upon such a God, think whether you will have to worry about anything at all, because God whom you rely upon is all-powerful, all knowing, and all pervading. In front of such a power, is there any anxiety called for?

To think a little more about God, because He is all-pervading, He is equally pervading in you as He pervades in all the rest. And whatever is there inside your body, is His presence and presence alone. Look, there cannot be two all-pervading presences, if you can focus on this point all the devotional disturbances are bound to subside. Though it is reliance on God, it is actually a quality and a habit of the mind that we are trying to cultivate, intensify and make perfect. Will you please think about this fact and truth and feel more and more about how much devoted you are and what can you do to further intensify and make it wholesome. You have to reflect upon God and His all-potent nature more and more and more.

The whole Earth along with the other four bhootas is a condensed form of God. The subtle God has become the gross world. Earth is only one of the many planets and heavenly bodies in the sky and you or anyone else is a little creature on this earth. If the whole earth and the world are God, what about you a small being in the earth? Can you think in this manner and identify yourself as the part of the entire God’s manifestation? When the mind expands and enlarges and gets elevated to this kind of a consummate and wholesome thinking all the little problems are bound to grow thin, thinner and be extinct.

To facilitate the whole process you can take to chanting the name of God or even a mantra. Any name that you are pleased with, go on chanting.  If the mind is too much disturbed, keep a special notebook, and then go on writing “Krishna Krishna pahi maam, Krishna Krishna raksha maam” in very small letters so that each page will contain scores and scores of such writing. Chanting, the mind may not remain always focused on, but writing it has to be more. So when the mind is too worried or anxious take the notebook and start writing. Write legibly, uniformly, slowly and whole-heartedly. Let me know after you do it for a while. You have all my blessings and fondness.
